Lawrence Stone, MD
Dr. Lawrence Stone is a board-certified ophthalmologist with more than 40 years of private practice experience and over 10,000 surgical procedures performed. His clinical background encompasses cataract surgery, glaucoma, oculoplastics, and general ophthalmology. He provides medical expert-witness services nationally, including case assessment, medical record review, causation analysis, written opinions, and deposition and trial testimony.
His medical-legal work includes complications of cataract surgery, ocular trauma, visual dysfunction following traumatic brain injury (TBI), delayed diagnosis or treatment, and permanent visual impairment. Cases that initially involve one area of ophthalmology often evolve to encompass several subspecialties. Dr. Stone’s broad clinical background is particularly well suited to evaluating these complex cases.

Areas of Expert-Witness Practice
Cataract Surgery and Intraocular Lens Complications
Posterior capsule rupture, vitreous loss, retained lens fragments, dislocated intraocular lenses (IOLs), multifocal IOLs, surgical complications, and their postoperative management.
Glaucoma and Optic Neuropathy
Vision loss associated with inadequate control of intraocular pressure (IOP) or other glaucoma risk factors; complications of glaucoma surgery; and misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis of optic nerve disease.
Traumatic Brain Injury and Visual Dysfunction
Diplopia, ocular motility abnormalities, vestibulo-ocular reflex impairment, visual dysfunction associated with neurological injury, and resulting functional impairment.
Ocular and Orbital Trauma
Blunt and penetrating injuries, orbital fractures, eyelid injuries, traumatic visual loss, surgical management and complications, and residual functional or cosmetic impairment.
Other Ophthalmic Matters
Delayed or missed diagnosis of retinal detachment, contact lens complications, corneal disease, ocular inflammation, endophthalmitis, and refractive lens exchange.
Review Methodology
Interpreting a complex medical record can be like piecing together a puzzle. I examine descriptions and explanations that appear inconsistent with other documentation or differ significantly from my own clinical experience; review findings from later treaters, including those unaffiliated with the practice; and consider alternative explanations and develop counternarratives.
My reviews begin with a single timeline anchored to significant events such as an injury, surgery, complication, or change in clinical status. In many cases, I build upon this timeline as additional details emerge.
When clinical issues diverge, I construct issue-specific subtimelines. In a recent case involving cataract surgery and a dislocated intraocular lens (IOL), reduced vision from macular edema developed within weeks after the second surgery and subsequently resolved, whereas eye pain developed after the third procedure and persisted. Separating these clinical courses helped the legal team better understand causation and damages.
